The Call You Don't Want to Get

It's every parent's nightmare and it happened to me yesterday. The phone rang and I picked it up.

"MAMA!"

I knew. The strangled cry, the terror, the emotion. "What's wrong?"

"I got into a car wreck! "

My first thought, was "She's making the phone call herself. It's going to be okay." My baby has been driving for three months and she is a great little driver. She's just an inexperienced driver. She rearended someone on Hwy 217 at 3:00 yesterday afternoon. It had been stop and go traffic, but she hit hard enough that both airbags deployed. It took me fifteen minutes to get there because traffic was piling up. She looked so little standing there listening to the policeman tell her what was going on and trying to fill out forms.Everyone involved in the accident (three other cars) was very nice to her, but I will never forget the relief on her face when I finally got there.

She cried on and off yesterday evening. We don't know what's going on with our new car. It's painful to watch your children grow sometimes. But maybe feeling a little less safe will make her a little more cautious.

Oh, I remember making a call like that to my parents in my younger years. Glad to hear she wasn't hurt, especially with the accident being on the freeway. Ugh.

I'm so glad she's okay. My daughter has her permit, and we're just now beginning to let her practice with us. It's scary.

Nearly killing myself in a car more than once finally wised me up as a teen driver. (I have to admit that my experiences were sooo bad that they proved to me God really does exist.)

I'm so glad your kiddo is okay.

And I don't even want to think about my kids driving. (My oldest is nine.)

At least no one was hurt. Hope she's doing better today. ;-)

I'm SO glad she wasn't hurt. Seems to be a rite of passage for teens. They all go through it. Hugs.

Oh, wow! I'm so happy she's all right. I got into a car wreck last fall and I was scared. I can't imagine how she was feeling!

Thank goodness she wasn't hurt. And poor you getting the call. It's so horrible.

Argh - Teri, that is so rotten. I crashed my dad's car when I was 17 and it was the biggest wake up call of my life. The main thing is that everyone was okay.

Not sure I should read this just a couple of weeks before my daughter finally gets her license, but I also remember making that phone call home. My boyfriend (now husband) made it to me before my parents did and he lived about 5 miles farther away. It was scary, but I survived. Soooo glad Megan wasn't hurt!

I had one of those myself not long after I started driving. Glad she's okay and that you were there for her!

I had two pretty bad accidents as a teen (one my fault & the other not), it was scary, but it taught me to never forget to wear my seatbelt. Glad she's okay.

ps- I hope no men are reading this or that whole, 'men are better drivers than women' thing might be proven right! :)
