Morning... I think

Stayed up way too late last night working on my fiction. I integrated another crit to it and worked on chapter 5. I have like 83 pages now, so I'm slowly but surely coming along. I just wish I could see this morning! Have to take the ice princess to the rink and then get back to work. I'd rather go back to bed.

I sat down and did quite a bit of plotting on On the Edge. I worked each chapter out on a 3x5 card and attached them together with a paper clip. I started with the ending so I knew where I was going, I just had to figure out how to get there. I think it is going to help a lot as I write. I have never done that kind of plotting before, so this is new to me. How do you plot your novels?

Wow. That's and interesting plotting method.

I'm a new writer too and I kinda touched on this in my blog too. I plot and write from outline. First, I draft an initial synopsis where I just sit back and create a plot in my head. Then, I map it out on paper, chapter by chapter. It does change when I'm writing. But I feel comfortable having a path to follow.

I wish I were a plotter, but alas...Now that I sell on proposal (three chapters and a synopsis) I have to work up some kind of outline for the story. For that, I just think of what general direction I'd like the story to go. BUT, and I hate to admit this but my editors know so why not -- I don't use the synopsis/outline when I write the actual story. I toss it aside. The characters always lead me in a different direction. Sometimes I get stuck, and have to figure out how to get unstuck in a surprising way the readers won't expect.

I've never tried notecards like that before. Is it working out for you? Mind if I borrow your idea?

I use an outline, but I never get it more than half way done before I HAVE to start writing, so usually by the time I get to the middle of the story, I'm flying by the seat of my pants. Luckily, I almost always have an ending in mind, so it's just that last half (minus the last two chapters) that drives me to desperation.

I write a really disgustingly messy plot outline, kind of like a synopsis but the kind no one would ever see. Then I use that as my very loose outline to write the book. And of course my characters deviate like mad from it *g*

That wasn't helpful at all, was it?
