What's for Dinner

I have a confession to make. I am really tired of cooking dinner for my family. Now, remember, I homeschool and my hubby has always been on wonkey shifts so when the kids were younger, I might have to make six seperate meals a day. Yeah, six. As they grew I became so busy with driving, writing and homeschooling that I couldn't cook that much. So when my kids came of age, I created the make it yourself meal plan. Also known in my family as the FEED YOURSELF!!! diet.

Fortunately, my children do feed themselves. Unfortunately, they don't feed themselves well. My son likes carbs. My daughter likes pepsi and chocolate poptarts and I will eat anything that is fast and can be eaten with a book. Since I did away with the kitchen table to make some room for my office in the diningroom, I almost completely killed family meal times. I think we've all put on weight except my daughter who skates a couple of hours a day six days a week.

It's not like the husband doesn't help. He cooks several nights a week for us on his days off. But I am really going to have to get it together. So I am resolving to try to make the dinners a week. Then maybe I can make a couple of breakfast. Maybe. I don't want to take on too much.

Tonight we are having ribs marinaded and grilled on the bbq, pasta and grilled red pepers. A real meal.

hey, don't judge, my kids are 15 and 16... and they both know how to cook. Sorta.

I HATE to cook. Loathe it. And hey, we had an official family meal, too last night. Spaghetti with meatballs, cheesy bread, beans and salad.

And the oldest made the salad.

Wow, this is too funny, because just yesterday I resolved to try and feed my family better. It's not the cooking that I hate so much as the figuring out what to cook. It can wear a girl down!

Today I'm thinking steak, jacket spuds and salad, but tomorrow I have a terrible feeling my new wip will over take and it will be back to frozen stuff. And chocolate. It is easter, after all!

Let's form a club! I, too, hate, hate, hate cooking, but I didn't used to, so I believe it's from the fact that no one in my family likes the same things or will eat the same things. We are almost completely a "cook whatever you want" type of family, including my 10 yo son, perhaps the pickiest eater in the world. Can't remember the last time we sat down to a meal at a table (except at holiday gatherings with other people). But, it just got so frustrating to try to come up with something everyone would eat, which is basically pizza. I hate trying to decide what to fix, I hate the preparation (I leave a lot of that to my 17 yo daughter, who likes to cook but is also a picky eater, so that really limits what she'll cook). I finally just got rid of all the recipes I saved from my pre-marriage, I'm going to marry a man like my father who will eat and try anything, stage. I married a meat and potatoes man, who has no sense of food adventure. :-)

Um, yeah. I don't cook either. Except for spaghetti (sauce from a can), hamburgers, and mac 'n cheese. I'm fortunate in that my number 1 fan loves to cook.

However, we ALWAYS eat together. At the table. In the dining room. It's just not always a home-cooked meal.

But by the time I was a teenager, I was fending for myself in the kitchen. Which may be the origin of my tendency to carry a few extra pounds.
