So Tired

My mind is just numb.

I was up till midnight last night "talking" with my husband. All is good now, but sometimes you just have to hash things out. I wish he would feel like hashing at a decent hour I can tell you. I was up at 5:25 am yesterday, did a ton of running around and just felt like crap about nine. By twelve I was incoherent.

Now I have to write about whooping cough. And PPD and breastfeeding.

Not to mention chapter seven.

My new characters are clamoring for their voice too. Colorless dances around in my brain and I am coming up with new scenes and new ideas all the time. I'm not sure if I should be writing them down or what. Maybe I should just let them dance. I really don't want to take time away from the first draft of Rink Rats.

How many of you write more than one book at a time?

Not me. One book at a time. I can't stay in the 'moment' if I'm flipping from book to book.

I am, however, always thinking about the next book. Scenes for the 'next' one are always floating through my head. But I force myself to stay in the wip until it's done.

I may not CHOOSE to write more than one book at a time; however, that option may be taken away from me if I sell the YA I'm proposing along with the 2nd chick lit I'll be selling here pretty soon. I think they are different enough that I can do both at once.

However, though it wouldn't be a choice if I could help it, sometimes, it's good to just sit and write out what's in your head, or at least jot down as much of it in note form as you can. Because, otherwise, you stand the chance of forgetting great stuff! I have notes for different books all over the place. Sometimes I have whole scenes written out, or snippets of conversations between characters or backstory. Sometimes, it's worth it just to get it down on paper. Telling yourself you'll remember isn't necessarily going to make you remember, especially at our age. :-P

But, I wouldn't start it formally, just take notes from your subconscious. Maybe in a notebook titled, Colorless, so that you can keep anything you think of in there so it won't get lost.

Just my blow-hardy opinion, of course. :-)

I found out the hard way that I can't multi-task where writing is concerned. I can change diapers while I talk on the phone and yell at another kid. I can cook supper and help with homework. I can do laundry and...just about anything else. But I can't work on more than one book at a time, even if I'm just editing one. During a rough draft, I live completely in the world of my work, and coming out of it long enough to edit something else completely messes me up. And shoots my short term goals all to hell.

So I admire your ability to do fiction and non-fiction at the same time.

I haven't, and the thought of it scares me. But I know some writers do it. It just seems like getting into two different stories at the same time would be difficult. I hope I never have to do that.

Always write down your ideas! Keep an idea notebook so you can go back to it as needed.
